Treasure Box Wednesday: The Glass Menagerie and Other Thrifty Finds

You all will laugh... Here I am, a fan of antiques and art, and the find that made me happiest this week was a plastic take-out container of small glass animals.

"Why on earth?" you ask. Well, it's a funny thing-- I had these very same glass animals when I was a child, my dad having won them for me on my family's vacations in Cape May, New Jersey. Unfortunately, mine had gotten some kind of problem due to moisture, and they clouded over and were ruined. As much as it had pained me, I eventually had to throw them out. My beloved little Boardwalk arcade prizes were gone!

But oh, I saw these and this flood of wonderful memories overcame me. And at just a few bucks for the lot, I couldn't help myself. It made my day.

It's remarkable to me because they're in the same colors I remembered, same characters... everything. Anyway, it was a cheap, cheerful reminder of a lovely period of my life. (If you'd care to read a tale I'd written about it, you can check it out in "Magic Fingers Ma and the Quest for the Mega-Blender." Just click here.)

Other goodies this week were these chirpy Commodore bluebird salt and pepper shakers, probably from the 50s...

Such happy little fellows, I think looking at them will make cooking seem like less work.

I also found this 60s/70s blue carnival glass compote...

I hadn't seen this particular size before.

And lastly, at the Goodwill thrift store, I got this super-soft leather jacket. It still has its extra button sewed inside...

So, that closes the Treasure Box for this week! Thank you for sharing in my little joys.

And just so you all know, this Sunday's post will appear only here on http://thriftshopromantic.blogspot.com and NOT on www.thriftshopromantic.com . I'm going to be traveling, and won't be able to update the project site with the fresh post until Monday.

Until next time, friends!

I think the animals are beautiful. I too recently purchased something on Ebay that I'd had and cherished as a young girl -- my Tammy doll & a Susy Goose bedroom set (plus much more clothes than my Tammy ever had!) I think it's wonderful being able to take a trip down memory lane.

Doris- Oh, isn't that fun about your Tammy? And Ebay is so great for finding those lost items, too. I'd uncovered a Captain Midnight decoder pin similar to the one my dad had growing up and had lost. He was certainly happy at Christmas that year.

I used to have that same pink Snoopy dog. No idea what happened to it, let's just add that I had a little brother who had a problem with leaving my stuff alone. ;)

Oh Jenn, wow! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I had that same pink elephant! I think it was a souvenier from the circus or something. One ear broke off and I super glued it. Eventually it went the way of most chidhood treasures (the folks moved and threw things out).

Chyna- Do you know I didn't realize as a kid they were Snoopies? I thought of them as poodles. I was struck when I found this set how much my supposed "poodle" looked like Snoopy. It's hysterical you had one, too!

Melanie- Now you've gotten me wondering where all these little glass animals were available, since yours came from the circus.

I honestly don't remember what game my dad had won them from down in Cape May, either-- whether they were from the claw game or through ski-ball points.

Seeing thiose little animals made me seriously go through ski-ball withdrawal.

I'm going to Cape May in July.

Da Old Man- Ah, you recognized them from the old turf as well, eh?

How great you're going to Cape May this summer... Do you have a particular place you like to go there? Are you going to get to enjoy goodies from Morrow's Nut House? :)

You have a natural talent for finding treasures.
I cannot believe all the great things you have here.
The photos are truly wonderful.
I am now remembering my own plastic animal collection.
Mine came from A&W Root beer Stands,or Sonic .When I was a little girl they had little animal givaways. The little plastic animals came attached with tape to the straw when the car hop deliverd a root beer float.
I love all the great moments everyone is sharing.
Blessings to you.

How wonderful for you to find those animals again! I have so many little chatchkes to remind me of my childhood, they mean a great deal to me.

So... I'm in the process of gathering little things from my boys' collection of treasures so I can put together memory boxes for them. They are 14 and 17 now so they don't pay much attention to them but I know later in life, they will appreciate having the memories.

Terry- Aw, you must have just loved going to Sonic/A&W with that sort of treat-- how fun! (Sounds delicious, too!)

Tami- This is absolutely amazing to me how many folks seem to have loved them as kid, too! I had no idea!

Kelley- That's a wonderful idea! Someday they will enjoy so much that glimpse of happy childhood.

My little brother (who isn't so little nowadays ;) ) had one of those My Buddy Joey's as a kid and a dog stole it from him while he was at the babysitters. The kid has been mourning the loss of that buddy ever since.

My mom and I had made it our life's mission to track down that thing and after years (like decades) my dh and I found one on eBay. he is now safely stored away in a plastic box and everytime the bro comes back he gets ol' Joey out. Honestly it cracks me up!!! And the fact we were so desperate for that doll we were willing to pay antique store prices is just hilarious. TG he was cheaper on eBay.

Now to locate a Mrs Beasley......

Chyna- AH, I love the story of your brother and his dear departed buddy doll. For shame, that dog stealing the bro's best bud! That had to have been traumatic. How does your brother feel about dogs these days? :)

I can help you with Mrs. Beasley! Go to Bettysattic.com and search on Mrs. Beasley-- she's there!! She's been reproduced!!

I had that EXACT same set of animals as a kid, so I just got the biggest nostalgic headrush imaginable :D They were called crystal pets and all came together in a box, my favorites were the swan and the snoopy. Holy cow, I've turned to mush.

Amy- Isn't it funny how these things sneak up on you?

Bird- AH! The Crystal Pets name does sound familiar! And the fact you said they came in a box, that explains why there were so many of them together from the flea market. I'd wondered if they were someone's accumulation over the years or what.

How fun! You know, I never imagined they'd be known, recognized and loved by so many folks!!
