The Post-Christmas Thrifting Post

Apologies that this post was late, folks. I was wrapping up the vestiges of the Christmas holiday and just haven't had as much time online as I'd hoped.

With my dad visiting, we went o'er hill and dale, to the city's north and south, west and east, to a variety of antique shops and thrift stores in the area. Yes, when most folks are off at the malls exchanging their silk ties for other silk ties... or bathrobes for little black dresses... The Thrift Shop Romantic hits the second-hand stores!

And there was quite a bit of good fortune in that direction, as well! Like this lovely fairy-covered old vase from the Ohio River Boulevard Antique Mall...

Or this Italian plaster bust from the same place!

Like more mainstream stores, antique malls seemed to be having post-Christmas sales. So at 20-25% off, a little tough math (tough for me, that is!) proved that bargains could be had.

Strangely, I uncovered two World War II souvenir pillow covers in two different places-- one at the Good Samaritan Thrift Store in North Versailles. The other at Junk for Joy in Jeannette...

And I found this cute wooden and metal birdcage at the Red, White and Blue Thrift Store in Bellevue...

That's where I also found this pretty pink, green and purple vintage tablecloth!..

Then at the L&L Fleatique in Adamsburg, I found a rather startling thing-- a McCoy pottery vase for $11. Finding inexpensive McCoy these days is virtually impossible!...

I also uncovered at the Fleatique one of the bowls to my Hazel Atlas Moderntone dish set. I've never seen a bowl to it before!...

The vase there... almost of the same color... is called (and I need to do more research on this) "azureite" or I've also seen "delphite". It was a blue glass variation on jadeite and not terribly easy to find.

Lastly, I found a bunch of new Victorian postcards at the Ligonier Fleatique. There are all sorts of occassions here, from Christmas and Easter to Birthday and general greetings...

Well, that's all time will permit today, I'm afraid. Join me this Wednesday, for The Thrift Shop Romantic's Nifty New Year's Eve post. Virtual champaign for everyone!

Hope to see you then!

Hi Jenn!
I hope you and your dad had a great holiday!
I love the post cards. They always show so much emotion don't they?
I didn't get out thrifting after Christmas but I did a few returns to regular stores and was able to get really good deals on the items that I replaced and then I had money left over for a few extra items...on sale of course...so it all worked out to my advanatage.
I also picked up a few Christmas things on Boxing Day at 80% off the original pricing. These have been put away for next year. To say I was grinning from ear to ear is putting it mildly. LOL!
Anyway Jenn, I hope you have a very Happy New Year. Take care and stay safe.

Hey a friend for your other bust, will you be looking for a hat for this one also? ;)

Amazing finds you got there girl! Me I stayed home and kept low, one never knows when some crazed shopper will throw a shoe or something. LOL

Lois- Sounds like you had a thrifty and smart Christmas-- even planning ahead for the NEXT one! Congrats! A happy and safe new year to you, as well!

Chyna- Heh, yes, possibly-- depends on how this bust behaves. She seems a bit less haughty than some of the other ladies. :) (Your shoe joke-- both funny and oh-so-timely. :) )

You sure do get some wonderful things! Here in CA where I am our thrift stores hardly ever get great things like you found.

Hugs,
Joanne

Joanne- I haven't had the pleasure of thrifting in California. Interesting though, how thrifts vary across the country.

Apperas you and your dad had a great time. Nice finds, too. I especially liked the pillow covers. I've never seen anything like those before.
This is like a combination history/thrifting class.
Thanks for sharing those photos of your finds.

Da Old Man- The pillow covers are a favorite of mine, too. Seems they turn up in batches in my area-- I won't see them for a while and then POOF-- I'll find two on one day.

Hope you had a great Christmas!!

Great stuff. My mother and I will have to take a day or two and explore your favorite haunts. The Ligonier Fleatique is on our favorite list.

Jenn,
Love the fairy vase! Is that lusterware? I found a fairy candleholder today at Goodwill. I was thrilled! With the popularity of Tinkerbell and all of her fairy pals, we should see more and more in the stores. I picked up three more at Tuesday Morning for half-price. The fairy artwork in books is enchanting today. Cicely Mary Barker has wonderful books that are beyond breathtaking. Check out www.flowerfairies.com. I believe that fairies will be replacing angels for awhile. I'm throwing some pixie dust your way for 2009!

Michelle- Thanks-- I think the birdcage is going to be a big feature in a spring display!

Diane- I hope it works out for you. Yes, the Ligonier Fleatique is always a lot of fun. The Fleatique in Adamsburg/Jeannette will probably be one you'll enjoy as well, if you haven't yet been there.

Andrea- Yes, it is lusterware. Thanks for the pixie dust-- perhaps it will make my commute home easier. :)
