To go along with last week's little video tour of the Winchester Mansion, I thought you all also might get a kick out of seeing some of the rooms in the Madonna Inn, out in San Luis Obispo, California.
With 110 theme rooms all decorated in... um.... unique style-- from gaudy gilt to caveman kitsch, it's an eye-popping attraction! This is romantic decorating gone X-treme.

Anyway, that's what I have for you today. Sorry I'm running behind on posts this week, dear people. Sunday I was helping one of my friends assemble some large pieces of furniture and didn't get back home until it was too late and I was too unmotivated to post.

All I can say is "WOW"! Some of those rooms were just Crazy! The caveman room is kinda cool. Wonder if one person decorated them all or did they get a bunch of designers in there?
Lisa- I think I recall reading once somewhere on their web site that the owner had had strong input in the themes, and what went into each room, but don't quote me on that.
Wouldn't it be fun, though, to have that many rooms to decorate? But I imagine I probably would use less rock and vinyl upholstery. :)
Gotta love though that someone clearly had a vision! It's not like anywhere else I've seen.

My girls and I stayed there a couple of years ago. It was something else! The restaurant and lounge part of the Inn is a sight to behold too. Pink everywhere and the Christmas decorations in the main dining room are over the top!
We stayed in a simpler room, nothing too spectacular, although there were 2 paintings of kids with really big eyes and I had to take them off the wall and turn them around because they were scaring my kids!
This place has been around for eons, which you can tell by the decor, more in keeping of mid-century taste when things were more on the gaudy side. That said, it's not ugly-gaudy, more like retro-gaudy once you understand the time period in which it was built. It used to be THE place to go for a honeymoon if you couldn't afford to leave on a jet plane.
I've eaten in the Copper room or whatever the less formal dining area is called. The hammered-copper tables were pretty cool. When you first walk in you see the more formal dining area, lots of pink vinyl. I almost expected to hear Frank Sinatra belt out one of his love songs!
All in all, it's a pretty nifty place to go as it is definitely different.

Dawt- Hey, thanks for chiming in on your experience. From the video and photos is comes off as Gaudy Overwhelming. Like an overzealous mid-century interpretation of the Victorian idea of More is More.
I'd love to see it myself. One of my friends and his wife ended up staying in one of the rooms on his honeymoon. It had one of the waterfall showers. It was nutty.
Oh my goodness! This is amongst the most vulgar decor I have ever seen! (And I have had several visits to Las Vegas!)You would think if someone had that much money they just might engage an interior designer with a bit of class.
I don't know where you come up with this stuff Jenn, but I am really pleased you do as I so enjoy watching these video clips you put on your site.
