Goodwill Outlet Store -and- Wild About Harry

Well, it's been a very merry weekend-- for two reasons.

Let's go to the real thrifty news first.

Now in North Versailles, PA, across Route 30 from the location of the Good Samaritan Thrift Store, Rossi's Pop-up Flea Market and-- to speak in legitimate Pittsburghese-- "Where the Old Ames Department Store Used to Be," is a brand new Goodwill Outlet Store, which just opened November 10.

It's a huge building where everything that didn't sell at their stores in a certain time is sold by the pound. Housewares, furniture, clothes, etc. (I believe there is special pricing for things like electronics.)

Anyway, for local folks who miss the Goodwill that used to be there in North Versailles, across the street, I think you'll find this a pleasure. I'll have to get some contact information for it and update my Thrift Store Listings for the area.

I'm curious, for folks not in our region, have you ever been to a Goodwill Outlet Store? Are there others across the country?

Anyway, next-- I brought home something secondhand of a different nature... Four-month-old black-and-white kitten, Harry, from the local no-kill animal shelter, Animal Friends.

My resident kitten, eight-month-old Alice has been unnaturally grateful to see me when I return home evenings. This seems to have happened after a month where my Dad was there during the day keeping her company. While I love that she misses me so much, the fawning, over-relieved attention she pays me seems a little unhealthy for her. (Or perhaps she's a dog in disguise.) So I thought she might benefit from a little buddy.

Harry has much of Alice's personality-- friendly, happy and playful. So far their initial introductions have gone very well.

I have been informed by friends that two cats doesn't yet make me a Crazy Cat Lady. Crazy, perhaps. Owning cats, yes. But Crazy Cat Lady has apparently an Exceeding Two Cats threshold.

I'm apparently on the brink. :)

And for those who are curious, yes, Harry was named for Harry Potter. It just seemed to balance out well with the other kitten, named for Alice in Wonderland. I tried other literary names, but kinda thought "Atticus Finch" was a little too much nobility to weigh on a four month old kitten.

To all you thrifters and crazy cat ladies and secondhand pet adopters and all my other beloved friends out there, have a great week until I see your shiny faces again, perhaps, for Wednesday's post.

Jenn,
I live in Greenville, SC, and we do have a Goodwill Outlet that has been open for a few years now. My husband and I do a lot of thrifting, but have only been to this outlet twice that I can remember. I am not a big fan of "rifling" through huge bins of clothes & miscellany that seem like bottomless pits. My husband hates it and refuses to go back.

There is also in Greenville what may be another Goodwill outlet, but it is not designated as such, with only a "Goodwill" sign on the building. It is, however, what my family calls "the Goodwill where things go to die". There are no clothes at this Goodwill. They have furniture, small appliances, TVs, books, records, and VHS tapes & some DVDs. We go here for the books, records & VHS/DVDs. As we regularly go to the other local "regular" Goodwill stores, we often find VHS tapes at this store that we cannot figure out why we didn't find at a "regular" Goodwill. Also, sometimes VHSs that we may have passed up at a "regular" Goodwill because of being overpriced have shown up at "the Goodwill where things go to die" at a greatly reduce price.

Of course, you may have a different experience at your Goodwill outlet. I know from reading about your finds from "regular" Goodwills , the quality of merchandise you find there is way better than anything I have found around Greenville, SC.

Peggy- Hey, thanks for sharing your experience. "The Goodwill Where Things Go To Die" had me laughing. Sort of the Land of Misfit Toys for household good, then. :)

I'll show everybody what I got at the Goodwill outlet on Wednesday-- it didn't have a TON of stuff there yet, but I was happy with my finds.

Glad to give you a laugh! It's a long name for a Goodwill, but we enjoyed it so much when our son said it the first time, it just stuck!

Simple Needs- You type amazingly well given you're Hampered by Cat. :) They really do have a lot of personality. It's entertained me immensely so far.

Peggy- I will be thinking that phrase every time I go. :)

Harry is adorable for sure! I have never been to a Goodwill outlet but would love too! Lucky you to have one nearby! I hear stories about the amazing buys there! Have a great week Jenn!

Linda- I was lucky I was able to get at least one shot of him where he wasn't blurry and half-in frame. :)

Pretty kitty -- and good for you for getting an adult. I bet that made things easier for Alice.

You're not a cat lady with just two, and especially if none of you are on Prozac...

Alex- He's actually a four month old kitten, and Alice is only 8 months herself, so this is, so far, working out very well because they are playing with each other. Basically all the books I'd read indicated getting a new cat younger than the existing cat allows the resident cat to feel more in control. So far, it's working out.

And no, no Prozac. :)

Wow, a Goodwill Outlet!? I had never heard of such a thing until your post. I'm not sure digging through mounds of stuff is my thing exactly, but I may have to give it a go once just once to get the experience.

Also, since you're a Pennsylvania resident, Jenn, I figured I'd let you know I saw a sign for a new Goodwill in Philadelphia.
An old Walgreens is becoming a Goodwill "soon." I'll have to check on the status of "soon" and let you know about the grand opening!

Thrifted Finds- It can really get competitive! And thanks, re: the names. I think they suit my furred friends.

Jackie- Oh, that's fun- if you care to give us a run-down review of your experience here that would be so cool.

I just found your blog and love it!

I recently discovered the Goodwill outlet in Southern California (http://www.ocgoodwill.org/marketplace.aspx). I just peeked into the large "marketplace" area and it looks intimidating to buy an entire huge bin. Instead I shopped the large Goodwill store next door. It is well organized and packed with goodies.

Thanks for sharing your fun blog.
